Joey Logano rides fuel strategy to victory at Watkins Glen
Kyle Busch, who had stopped for fuel on the same lap as Logano, also got by the helpless Harvick on the final lap to finish second. Kevin Harvick coasted over the stripe to secure third. It’s the first road course win of his career, 25th in NASCAR’s second-tier series, and fourth win of the year.

“I felt like we got ourselves to be the first vehicle on fuel to make it”, Logano’s crew chief Todd Gordon said. “I am really excited after that one”. In ten races at Watkins Glen, Carl has only finished outside of the top ten on 3 occasions and I think this weekend might be the flawless time for him to get to Victory Lane. “I was really, really good through the bus stop so I was trying to use that to my advantage to pass cars and were able to kind of pick our way through it and then Harvick, once I got to him he picked it up”.
“It makes up for last week”.
If the Boot is added, The Glen would still not be the longest track on the overall NASCAR circuit. It was Jeff Gordon’s last race at WGI and the last run on the current racing surface. Harvick appeared to run out of gas with about one turn to go before the finish line.
“The thing I’ve learned about the Sprint Cup Series is it doesn’t matter whether somebody needs a win or not”, Allmendinger said. There was also a huge chain reaction accident that damaged several cars and Kahne was the biggest victim of the melee.
Harvick, who took the lead shortly after the race’s final restart, had pitted seven laps sooner. “I’ve never swept the weekend before”.
Logano scored his second win of the season to go along with his season-opening Daytona 500 victory. He takes what he get on the race track these days, which are often bleak and embarrassing for the three-time NASCAR champion.
Harvick was still leading going onto the final lap, and was given breathing space by Logano running wide at Turn 1. He beat the best in Marcos Ambrose in a fender-slamming victory at Watkins Glen worldwide last year for his first triumph in 213 starts in Cup competition.
When the race resumed, Kyle Busch put pressure on Keselowski and muscled past him on Lap 56 to take the lead. If someone outside the top sixteen wins one of the next few races there will be a very close battle for that last spot, but for now, the postseason field is all but set with Michael Waltrip Racing’s Clint Bowyer the last driver in. Habul spun back across the track and was hit hard by Ryan Reed, bringing out a 10-minute red flag and ending the day for Habul. That was probably another reason we didn’t need to run out of gas and have an issue here today. “This year, even through our struggles, we all believe in each other”.
Logano was 22nd when he restarted on Lap 27 after NASCAR threw the second caution of the race to retrieve the errant fuel can.
Quote of the Day: “Can we have something not break for once”, AJ Allmendinger when his auto would not restart.
“For us to be in the top 30 right now, that obviously allows us to change our mindset maybe a little bit here going forward”.

Pearn said he has to keep his priorities in order, however, and makes sure his main focus is on the race team but he manages to keep abreast of what is happening on the diamond.
