John Boyega surprises Star Wars fans
The opening of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” smashed so many box office records that it’s hard to gain a perspective on “What It All Means”.

“The Force Awakens” now holds the box office records for biggest Thursday night opening, biggest one day gross, biggest December debut, and biggest opening weekend of all time.
Exceeding the Walt Disney Company’s pre-weekend expectations, J.J. Abrams’ seventh installment of the widely popular saga grossed an estimated $238 million in the USA and Canada and had the second-biggest start of all time worldwide ($517 million), behind this summer’s “Jurassic World” ($524.9 million), which pulled in $208.8 million domestically in June.
Opening at midnight on Wednesday, the film took £9.6 million ($14.3 million) on its opening day, setting a new United Kingdom and Ireland record.
It is noteworthy that “The Force Awakens” broke the domestic opening weekend record in December, when audiences are usually considered to be distracted by holiday shopping. Many are already going back for a second helping. A total of 2 million tickets were booked ahead of the release – breaking another record for advanced ticket bookings. The film underperformed in South Korea, where a more popular local film was released at the same time.
Best single day: “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2”, $91 million – fell to “Star Wars” on Friday, with a $120,500,000 take.
Elsewhere, The Force Awakens opened to $US279 million as it played in every major market except China, India and Greece. Friday audiences were 63 percent male, he said.
IMAX, 3D and other premium large format screens further helped drive the massive earnings. But while the new film is ideal for a new entry point to the franchise for new fans, many want to know how they can dig in on the old movies to catch up with the complete story as meant to be told. One was how well the movie did among women (not generally considered a sizable percentage of “Star Wars” geeks) and children (that is, kids too young to be nostalgic for the original trilogy or even the prequels).

Although it had been a decade since the last “Star Wars” movie, Disney and Mr. Abrams had to revive a franchise that had been largely dormant since the “Return of the Jedi” in 1983. AMC Theatres offered new movie posters to people who bought Imax 3D tickets for Sunday showings. The movie stars previous stars Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, along with newcomers Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Lupita Nyong’o, Adam Driver and Oscar Isaac.
