A league source told CSNBayArea.com on Wednesday that the 49ers do not have any scheduled interviews with new candidates and appear to be nearing a conclusion to their search for a new head coach. The third-round pick had an 11-year playing career that included stops with the New York Giants (1999-2002), Dallas (2003-05), Detroit (2006-08) and New Orleans (2009).

Having hired the guy portrayed in MoneyBall, Paul DePodesta despite no track record of his system working with football in the slightest, the Browns have made Jackson’s job harder. He’s ready to clean it up.

Jackson, 50, is the 16th head coach in the history of the Browns and one of three Bengals assistants to recently leave the club for head coaching gigs, joining Mike Zimmer (Minnesota) and Jay Gruden (Washington).

Figured to be one of the hotter head coach candidates this offseason, the choice of Jackson to sign so quickly with the Cleveland Browns is something that we’ll all be scratching our heads at. Owner/general manager Jerry Jones has said in the past he wanted to draft Manziel but was talked out of it. Last week, Jones was asked on his weekly Dallas radio show about “young backup quarterbacks who come with some risks” without Manziel being mentioned by name, and Jones said the Cowboys would consider it. Neither becoming competitive enough to matter in their division although last season the Browns surprised a lot of people by staying in the hunt for their division until nearly the final month. “I don’t know Johnny personally”.
