He is being released into the care of family and will live with his mother in Virginia.
Hinckley, who was obsessed with Hollywood actress Jodie Foster, was later found not guilty by reason of insanity but sent to St Elizabeths psychiatric hospital in Washington.
FILE – In this Monday, March 30, 1981 file photo, Secret Service agents and police officers swarm a gunman, obscured from view, after he attempted an assassination on President Ronald Reagan outside the Washington Hilton h.
The man who tried to assassinate President Reagan is headed home – seemingly for good. President Reagan and the other shooting victims recovered from their wounds.
In July, a federal judge chose to grant Hinckley, 61, “full-time convalescent leave” from St. Elizabeth’s Hospital.
Participation in “individual music therapy sessions” at least once a month and in “structured activities in the Williamsburg area”, including volunteer work is required.
John W. Hinckley Jr. was released Saturday morning, the Associated Press and Washington Post reported, and will live in Williamsburg, which he has visited multiple times for short trips.
But in a statement obtained by PEOPLE, officials with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and Institute criticized the decision.
Levine was not immediately available for comment when contacted by AFP. One died two years [James Brady] ago from the wounds he received.
Mr Reagan publicly forgave Mr Hinckley and even sought a meeting with his would-be assassin, but was advised by doctors that such an encounter would hinder the gunman’s recovery.
Ronald Reagan’s son Michael simply tweeted that since Saturday is a college football day then he would not comment on politics today, or apparently the Ronald Reagan shooter.
Hinckley’s long-time attorney didn’t provide any more details about his client’s whereabouts following his release but cited medical evaluations as proof he no longer poses any threat. A federal judge granted his request for convalescent leave in July. “I’ve got to do something now to make you understand, in no uncertain terms, that I’m doing all of this for your sake!”

Don’t expect to see Hinckley giving any interviews.
