John Kerry to travel to Kenya for talks on regional issues

The U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry, will on Tuesday next week, August 23, visit Nigeria to discuss “counter-terrorism efforts, the Nigerian economy, the fight against corruption, and human rights issues”.

United States government has said it will meet with President Muhammadu Buhari and northern state governors in Nigeria on issues concerning Boko Haram insurgency and religious extremism.

“The Secretary will travel to Sokoto, and Abuja, on August 23 to 24”.

In Sokoto, Mr Kerry will speak on the importance of resilient communities and religious tolerance in countering violent extremism.

A statement from the USA embassy in Nairobi said Kerry, who will be accompanied by Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Linda Thomas-Greenfield, will discuss counter-terrorism cooperation as well as next year’s general elections in Kenya. Kerry also will meet with leaders from the country’s largely Muslim north. He will also meet Kenya’s Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed and other regional foreign ministers.

The statement explained that the secretary would have the opportunity of meeting with participants of the Young African Leaders Initiative and the Mandela Washington Fellows programmes during the visit. The talks will include Saudi leaders, counterparts from Britain and in the regional Gulf Cooperation Council and the United Nations special envoy for Yemen.

While in Saudi Arabia, Kerry will focus on the conflict in Yemen as well as the war in Syria and the fight against the Islamic State group, the State Department said.
