Meanwhile, Lennon’s widow Yoko Ono is now on her way to Iceland, where she’ll mark her late husband’s birthday by lighting the Imagine Peace Tower memorial, which was unveiled in 2007.
We look back at aspects of his life in pictures.
The late British rockstar and peace activist was assassinated for his pacifist views in New York on December 8, 1980 but his words and songs continue to resonate even today. A live stream of the light tower will be viewable at ImaginePeaceTower.com.
The event begins at 6 p.m.in front of the Capitol Records Tower in Hollywood, 1750 N. Vine St.
City Councilman Mitch O’Farrell will present of a “John Lennon Peace Day” resolution from the council, and other speakers will include veteran Los Angeles radio personality Jim Ladd, KCSN-FM (88.5) deejay and Beatles aficionado Les Berry and Times pop music writer Randy Lewis. The city also is hosting a park walk that will take fans to various Liverpool sites where Lennon used to spend time when he was young.

Lennon was only 40 years old when he was killed by a deranged fan on December 8, 1980.
