The co-founder of the Beatles was gunned down nearby in front of his NY apartment building by a deranged fan in early December, 1980.

Lennon was rushed to hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival, with doctors saying he suffered several severe wounds to his upper body.

Lennon’s death shocked the world and was marked by a variety of vigils and tributes, as fans and friends tried to come to terms with the loss of one of the most influential and beloved music artists ever.

“This was STAT to the ER, so I go down to the ER directly and I say what’s going on and they say we have a gunshot wound to the chest coming in, period”.

The loss of the beloved 40-year-old member of The Beatles provoked a debate over gun violence that is eerily similar to the current national conversation sparked by a shooting massacre last week in San Bernadino, California.

His killer, Mark David Chapman, surrendered to police at the scene and is now still imprisoned for the murder.

People gather at the mosaic named for the John Lennon’s song “Imagine” December 8, 2015 at Strawberry Fields, the Central Park garden dedicated in his honor, in NY. Chapman has been eligible for parole since 2000, but has been denied eight times.

It wasn’t too much longer before everyone in the room realized it was indeed John Lennon.
