John Tortorella will bench players if they sit during the national anthem

The eight World Cup hockey teams will be split into two groups.

Longtime NHL head coach and current Team USA hockey coach John Tortorella has made it abundantly clear to his players how he feels about the national anthem. It probably didn’t hurt that Kane posted a league-best point total in a career year last season, either. The next World Cup wasn’t held until 2004, when Canada beat Finland in the final. “To go into our meetings about this I’m not going to talk about it, but Joe has been a great player for USA Hockey. It was aggressive everywhere”.

Former Badgers defenseman Ryan McDonagh is also part of the Americans’ seven-man leadership group, which includes alternate captain Patrick Kane, David Backes, Ryan Kesler and Zach Parise.

However, according to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, at least back in March, the plan for the World Cup of Hockey was for an anthem only to be played when something has been won from a tournament perspective.

The 6-3, 210-pound rearguard might pair up with fellow St. Louis defender Jay Bouwmeester, as the two did in the Sochi Olympics in 2014, to take on Team Europe (players from Slovakia, Germany, Austria, France and other European countries other than Czech Republic, Sweden, Russia or Finland), Team Czech Republic and Team USA. “Were not afraid to lead ‘SportsCenter with it if its great hockey game or a specific play, something out of the ordinary.

Additionally, the World Cup of Hockey should provide some very good hockey over the next few weeks – eons superior to typical preseason hockey. Team Europe will feature players from countries other than those represented from that continent, and Team North America will feature a roster of players under 23-years-old.

Players invited to try out for Canada’s Olympic team in 2017 to ’18 are expected to be named shortly after the world championship.

Sure Montreal could have more players suiting for global competition, however, since their recent draft were majorly focused on Canadian, American, and Russian players, we can’t expect more from this team for now. This tournament provides a first look at the NHL’s partnership with Adidas, who designed the uniforms for each team involved. He was a late addition to Team Canada’s roster.

Canada faces off Friday in Columbus and Saturday in Ottawa against the Americans, who have assembled the biggest, toughest team they could whose sole objective is to try to not just beat but beat up Canada.

In 11 days, hockey will be back on a world stage.

Good to know. So it appears that Tortorella – whose son is an Army Ranger now deployed overseas – is making the statement nearly purely on principle rather than out of perceived necessity; though his anthem stance will presumably apply to his National Hockey League team, the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“It was something that as a young American player, you wanted to be part of”, he said. “Its the best sport in the world, so youd think theyd want to have it.”.
