John Wick is turning into a VR first-person shooter

And there’s nothing you can do about it…except buy a VR set from HTC.

Despite making double its expected opening box office gross, the 2014 Keanu Reeves action flick John Wick still seems like a odd film to be getting a game adaptation that is not a direct tie-in, and it would seem even stranger for it to be making its way into virtual reality, but that is exactly what Lions Gate Entertainment Corp plans on doing through its newly announced partnership with Starbreeze Studios. Not just any FPS, however, but one tailor-made for VR headsets.

In the short-term, Starbreeze will integrate John Wick’s storyline into its popular “Payday” game, which is a first-person shooter developed by Overkill Software that’s centered on performing heists. The best chance for that with North American fans will be at PAX Prime in Seattle, August 28th-31st.

Development will be handed by VR studios WEVR and Grab, and it will support multiple VR devices.

The film’s producer Basil Iwanyk and some of its production team will also collaborate on its development.

John Wick was one of the most criminally underrated movies of last year, not just by action thriller margins, but as a genuinely all-round entertainer.

According to the statement, Lionsgate is also now developing a John Wick sequel that is now projected for release in September 2016.

It’s unclear at this point if John Wick star Keanu Reeves will be reprising the title role. But that will only serve as an appetizer to the main course, which we look forward to trying before its launch on VR headsets next spring.
