Johnny Manziel assault indictment could come Tuesday

Johnny Manziel is expected to be indicted Tuesday on allegations that he attacked his ex-girlfriend in January, an attorney for the troubled former National Football League quarterback said Monday.

But Manziel attorney Robert Hinton told the Associated Press on Monday he has been informed by prosecutors that they intend to indict his client on Tuesday.

KRLD radio, a CBS affiliate, reported late on Sunday that Manziel, 23, had been indicted on a class A misdemeanor domestic violence assault charge, citing a Dallas County District Attorney’s office source. The Class A misdemeanor carries up to one year in jail and a $4,000 fine.

Dallas police referred the case to a grand jury in February, asking the Dallas County District Attorney’s Office to present the misdemeanor assault case.

Manziel was dropped by the Cleveland Browns, two separate agents and all the companies for which he endorsed products after allegations that he hit his girlfriend.

Crowley, also 23, told police that Manziel slapped her on the head and ruptured her left eardrum, causing her to lose her hearing. Burkhardt’s replacement, Drew Rosenhaus, dropped Manziel last week. She claims she was accosted at a Dallas hotel and later struck while driving back to her apartment in Fort Worth.

Crowley was granted a protective order against Manziel for two years.

Crowley alleged she and Manziel had a confrontation in the hotel room that eventually continued downstairs to the valet station.

Lawyers watching the case say both sides have incentive to make a deal instead of going to trial. She said Manziel got into the driver’s seat and began to drive.

Manziel, a Heisman Trophy victor at Texas A&M, is a free agent without representation after two agents let him go while demanding he get a second round of treatment for drug and alcohol use.

“I’m hoping to take care of the issues in front of me right now, so I can focus on what I have to do if I want to play in 2016″, Manziel said in a statement last week”.

Manziel spent 73 days in Pennsylvania rehab facility, entering voluntarily in January 2015.
