American TV station, KTTV-TV, reports the 80-year-old singer was travelling back to Los Angeles when he learned that his house had caught on fire. “I was thinking a little fire”, Mathis told KTLA-TV after seeing the extent of its damage.

He wasn’t home when the fire broke out, but firefighters said they were able to save a few of his trophies and memorabilia once they knocked down the blaze.

“I’m OK, nobody got hurt – that’s always important”.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the home caught fire shortly after 5.30pm, and was put out in about half an hour by more than 40 firefighters.

It’s not clear what started the fire, but investigators have cited both a room with aquarium equipment and a brush fire that spread to the mansion.

A few of Mathis’ greatest hits include “Chances Are”, “It’s Not For Me To Say”, and ironically, “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes”.

Mathis is in the midst of a long tour to celebrate his 60th anniversary in show business, which takes him through next year.
