Dustin Johnson held off the challenge of England’s Paul Casey to win the BMW Championship in Carmel, Indiana.

Roberto Castro holed out for eagle from the seventh fairway on his way to a 67 to finish alone in third, sending the Georgia Tech grad and Atlanta resident home to play in the Tour Championship for the second time.

Day, who is already guaranteed a place in the season-ending Tour Championship – starting on September 22 – and remains in with a chance of winning the FedEx Cup, has a history of back trouble.

J.B. Holmes watches his shot off the tee of the 17th hole during the third round of the BMW Championship golf tournament at Crooked Stick Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., Saturday, Sept. 10, 2016.

Johnson has left his mark on this season in the exact way nearly every Player of the Year victor has – a major victor (for the first time), WGC victor and FedEx Cup Playoff victor in the third event of the playoffs.

His place in Atlanta in two weeks’ time, where the victor of the season long FedExCup will claim the $US10 million bonus, is now in doubt. He also dealt with back pain during the 2015 Barclays. “Getting treatment. Precautionary WD”, wrote Everill on Twitter.

“I don’t think it’s anything he hasn’t dealt with before”, Martin said.

“The trainer is maybe thinking it’s the same type of thing that he dealt with at the Barclays and past year where he picked something up in his bus and it kind of got out of line”.

“But just better safe than sorry”.

Casey made a 25-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole to get within one shot, but that lasted only as long as it took Johnson to make an 18-foot eagle putt on top of him to keep the margin at three shots.

Jordan Spieth: Spieth just can not quite get over the hump.

Day opened proceedings on Sunday with a par on his opening hole, but dropped three strokes in by the time he reached the fourth tee on the back of a bogey-double bogey run.

A final round 71 left him 12 under, 11 shots off the win.

Now Johnson will try and replicate something else only Woods has done: Win the Tour Championship as the No. 1 player in the FedEx Cup points race going into the final event. “I’m going to go out there and play good golf and see what happens”.

The impetus for Johnson’s switch came from playing several rounds during the FedEx Cup Playoffs with Jason Day.
