Johnson lifts Mets pasts Marlins 5-2; Walker likely done
Fernando Salas, whom the Mets acquired from the Los Angeles Angeles Wednesday, made his first appearance for his new club in the seventh, allowing one hit and striking out one over one inning of work. The Mets won 5-2 for their ninth win in 11 games.

“It’s a new month, man”, Yelich said. “Hopefully September is better”. After a pair of strikeouts in the first inning, Esch allowed four consecutive baserunners in the second, including Flores’ 15th home run. Plus, he made a dashing, diving catch in centre field with the bases loaded and two outs – that made up for him later dropping a routine fly for an error. The Mets have leapfrogged the Marlins and Pittsburgh Pirates in the standings in recent days, so no one stands between the Mets and the teams who now own the wild-card spots.
Unfortunately we didn’t get the win. “I guess I’ve got to go check”. “Because one’s going to”. The shaggy-haired ace then waved for the trainer as he headed down the dugout tunnel toward the clubhouse when he was done.
“I can’t explain the importance of having a veteran player who has been through many, many different situations, who can come off the bench and be a big hitter in big situations”, Collins said.
Cabrera told Collins after Wednesday’s win that he could use a respite.
Unsatisfied with a scoreless tie, Yelich took the game into his own offensive hands the next five innings. That’s just not Jake. “Strike-thrower, not an overpowering guy by any means, but 90-91 [mph], but the one thing he does is he gives us that experience to help us bridge that young rotation into back of the bullpen, which we’re going to need”.
“Massive”, Johnson said about how big of an impact losing Walker for the remainder of the season would be.
Jose Urena earned his third win of the season, scattering four hits over six innings of one-run ball as the Mets stranded 12 runners on-base.
His homer down the left-field line, following a walk to Granderson, gave the Mets a 2-1 lead and continued to add to his belief that he can hit right-handed pitchers.
Jay Bruce’s RBI single in the eighth cut the deficit to 6-2 as the Mets loaded the bases with nobody out.
New York Mets ‘ Yoenis Cespedes bumps fists with Michael Mancini, a member of the Maine-Endwell Little League World Series championship team before a baseball game against the Miami Marlins, Wednesday, Aug. 31, 2016, in New York.
The Mets announced two transactions after the game.
“He’s not afraid to play cheap”, Mattingly said. The Marlins are 1-5 in the last 6 meetings in NY. He’s getting treatment and could play this weekend at Cleveland.
Mets: Cespedes and Cabrera didn’t start after it rained most of the afternoon.
“I think it’s mechanical”, deGrom said”. To make room for Hood on the 40-man roster, the Marlins designated LHP Raudel Lazo for assignment. He played high school football with A.J. McCarron and had committed to play wide receiver at Alabama, but was picked by the Washington Nationals in the second round of the 2008 draft and signed with them.

Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich, who finished 3-for-4 with a walk and four RBI, returned to torment the Mets on both sides of the ball.
