Johnson rolls at BMW

Dustin Johnson is celebrating another victory.

Right down to his putter.

Before the golfers teed off for the championship, BMW invited a few out to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for some high-speed time with a few of their cars. He ran off four birdies in a five-hole stretch to regain control Sunday, left Paul Casey feeling helpless by matching his eagle putt late in the round and sailed home to a 5-under 67 for a three-shot victory at Crooked Stick. He is hitting wedges good enough for multiple birdie chances.

“Obviously, my performance this week was fantastic”, said Johnson. “I putted really great this week”. “It was a little frustrating I lipped them out”. It was red, just like the model world No. 1 Jason Day uses. “That was really the only reason I changed”. He still managed a bogey-free 68 and will be in the final group Sunday.

Attendance was down about 13 percent, from about 143,000 in 2012, when Crooked Stick last hosted the tournament, but this year’s event was plagued by rainy, stormy weather that delayed rounds during the first three days of play.

Casey missed five fairways, his most this week in any round, yet still managed to keep bogeys off his card with smart shots out of the wet rough and solid putting.

Johnson couldn’t make any putts early.

“Not much you can do”, he said Saturday after posting 15-under 201.

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) – Dustin Johnson knows as well as anyone that no matter how good he is and how well he plays, something can always go wrong in golf. With his third win of the year, Johnson jumped to top spot on a FedEx Cup points list as the top 30 players advance to the season finale Tour Championship in Atlanta in two weeks. Holmes at least is making a compelling case to be a captain’s pick for the Ryder Cup when Davis Love III announces three of his selections on Monday.

Englishman Casey also shot 67 for second place on 20 under, his second consecutive runner-up finish, with American Roberto Castro (67) another three shots back in third place. Johnson answered with a pair of birdies and he was on his way.

“I’m certainly a long shot”.

His agent says Day was being cautious by withdrawing and hopes to be at the Tour Championship. That means he only has to win at East Lake to capture the $10 million bonus.

Other Ryder Cup hopefuls didn’t shine.

Rickie Fowler won’t have any chance at all.

SPIJK, Netherlands – Scott Hend picked up four shots in his last five holes to finish at 14 under and take a one-shot lead into the final round of the KLM Open on Saturday. Bertasio bogeyed the final hole for a 67. Fowler would have made it to the Tour Championship if Holmes made either a birdie or a bogey.
