“It’s usually challenging for us to collect enough blood to meet the needs of the hospitals we serve during the summer months”, said Red Cross Donor Recruitment Manager of NY-Penn Region Blood Services Sonja Ronovech.

“The Red Cross continues to have an emergency need for blood and platelet donors to give now and help save patient lives”, said Nick Gehrig, communications director, Red Cross Blood Services.

Red Cross 143 volunteers are also tasked to keep a directory of people in the community with their respective blood types to make it easier for the PRC to find and to tap people with particular blood types to give blood in case of mass casualty incidents, disasters and other emergencies.

You don’t have to wait for a blood drive to donate, you can actually walk in to the Red Cross location on Commercial Dr.in New Hartford during normal business hours. Right now, blood products are being distributed to hospitals faster than donations are coming in.

The American Red Cross is constantly in need of blood donations, and on Tuesday, Aug. 9, you can play an integral role in possibly saving a life by making a donation.

To thank people who donate blood and platelets through August 31, the Red Cross is emailing them a $5 Amazon.com gift card claim code.

Groups that have supported the Red Cross Blood Program through sponsorship or by organizing mass blood donations were also recognized. Those who donated blood earlier this summer may be eligible to donate again. Completing a RapidPass online health history questionnaire ahead of time streamlines the donation process.
