Decked out in a T-shirt and sporting a beard, Stewart wandered on set as current host Trevor Noah went about his business.

If yesterday is any sign of the future, we might see Jon Stewart back on the show in the next few weeks and months to sprinkle in some surprise appearances. Mitch McConnell to pull together to support the Zadroga Act, which expired and is quickly running out of money.

“The only conclusion that I can draw [about their decision not to renew the act] is that the people of Congress are not as good a people as the people who are first responders”, he said bluntly.

As the clock ticks, first responders and Stewart have gone back and forth to Congress, lobbying lawmakers who haven’t signed on to back the reauthorization act.

Stewart accuses Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of refusing to move the Zadroga renewal bill forward for “purely political reasons”. The five years of funding are over, but Congress has not renewed the act.

Stewart then explained the law, which provides health care to first responders who obtained injuries or illnesses due to the September 11th attacks, to Noah – who couldn’t figure out why Congress had not yet made the law permanent.

“So right now there are 67 senators sponsoring the bill, 260 representatives, which even by stupid Senate and House math is more than enough to do this”, Stewart said.

“He used the health of 9/11 first responders as a bargaining chip to make it easier to sell oil?” “So I thought, you have a show, and maybe I could come”. Stewart, dressed in a t-shirt, said to Noah at the beginning of his segment.

Stewart isn’t Jay Leno and when he attempted to calm Noah’s feigned nervousness, it felt honest (plus he’s got his own HBO deal), but when it comes to The Daily Show, the reminder of Stewart’s past – or, to be more seasonal, the reminder of The Ghosts of Hosts Past – is probably more potent. In 2010, Stewart took up their cause, dedicating an entire show to the issue. Kenny Specht was the only one still alive and he re-met with Stewart to discuss the enduring importance of the issue.
