Jones boy the man to beat at Aussie Open

Jones, a member at The Australian Golf Club, had a 7-under 135 total on a course that was playing only slightly easier a day after brutal wind and heat sent scores soaring.

The win earns Jones a spot in the Open at Royal Troon next July, and he is joined by compatriots Pampling, who finished in fourth, and Nick Cullen, who shot a final round 68 to finish in fifth.

The field’s main Australian draw, Adam Scott, looks to be out of contention after a miserable day on the greens saw him card two over, leaving the 2009 champion nine shots off the pace.

The Australian was three over for his round after two holes, a bogey on the first immediately followed by a double at the first par three.

Matt Jones talked about the “stress and anxious moments” during his final round at the Australian Open on Sunday.

Spieth could not take advantage, missing a short putt for par to go back to 5-under. “‘I would have been pretty excited to be in a play-off with Matt as that would have added to this week as the crowds have just been unbelievable and much bigger than last year” said Spieth.

“I’m playing to a strategy I have”, he said.

For the preceding three hours, Pampling sat in the clubhouse as the new leader of the tournament, probably still blinking in surprise as to how he had just managed to smash the course record of the fairways in front of him.

“I just told him, that was one of the best fought wins I’ve ever seen, to come through what he did on two, nine and then that par he made on twelve”, Spieth said.

“You never know how they’re going to finish up but at least I clawed into red figures and start tomorrow hopeful of something special”.

Golf Australia did not announce dates for the 2016 tournament.

Australian veteran Rod Pampling shot the round of his career to break Jordan Spieth’s course record at The Australian Golf Club with a 10-under 61 on the final day of the Australian Open on Sunday.

Bourdy hit four consecutive birdies before a triple-bogey on the par three seventh hit his challenge, despite a mini-recovery late on when he claimed birdies on the 15th and 16th.
