Jordan Spieth builds 4-stroke lead in Tournament of Champions

A scintillating round of 64 from world number one Jordan Spieth gave him a four-shot second-round lead at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. And with a par on the closing hole, he still had a career-best 63.

His remarkable round, which included seven birdies and an eagle, left him one shot shy of the 54-hole record at Kapalua that Ernie Els set in 2003 on his way to an eight-shot victory.

There was no stopping Jordan Spieth, however, as the world No 1 continued his masterclass at the Plantation Course at Kapalua with an eight-under to hold the lead heading into the final round on 24-under. I want to prepare and start the year with a bang, but I’m only through 36 holes. “If I can continue to limit those or keep a blemish-free card, we’re going to be in a good position because there’s enough easy holes to take advantage of”.

Stone was also 10 under, picking up four birdies in his opening nine, and five birdies in the 11 holes he managed to play on Saturday.

Spieth and Reed will play together again on Friday, continuing a rivalry that has already seen the twenty-somethings duel in two PGA Tour playoffs. After a three long weeks without any golf, the PGA TOUR is finally back in action this week in Hawaii with the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.

He sank testing par-savers on the 16th and 17th holes and then finished his round in style, coaxing in a 13-foot birdie at the par-five 18th where his ball teetered on the edge of the cup before dropping in.

Australia’s Steven Bowditch is one shot further back at ten-under along with American Rickie Fowler, the duo both shooting second round 67s.

Reed picked up just two birdies on his outward run and said the second, at the par-five ninth, was a turning point. He started the back nine with three straight birdies, and the only glitch was failing to birdie the two par 5s on the back nine.

“The way he plays, I don’t know”, Kisner said.

“I am a bit surprised at my chipping because I have not put much time into my chipping whatsoever in the last month”, he said.

If that’s going to be the case and it leads to more shots and scoring like we saw on Thursday, I think it’s safe to say that we’ll all be looking forward to it.
