Jordan Spieth: Golfer storms into US PGA contention

Robert Streb matched the all-time major low-round record with a seven-under-par 63 Friday at rain-softened Baltusrol, where storms were forecast in the late afternoon for the lead groups.

Alas as the horn was for unsafe weather he was not allowed to complete the hole and instead of heading home at 2:15pm he was forced to sit around in the clubhouse until 5:55pm before they called off play.

As one of the earlier starters in round two, Spieth was held up on Friday when heavy rain forced a brief suspension in play.

Play was suspended at 2:14 p.m. and never resumed.

Baltusrol has already been pounded by more than four inches of rain since Monday.

Day, who is one shot behind, is looking to join Tiger Woods as the only repeat champion since stroke play began in 1958.

Daniel Summerhays, right, celebrates with his caddie Nick Jones, left, after making an eagle on the second hole during the third round of the PGA Championship golf tournament at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, N.J., Satur.

And Italian Francesco Molinari had an incredible back nine, finishing with six successive birdies to post a two-under 68 for a one-under total.

A birdie on the second hole built a bit of momentum before he sunk a 31-foot birdie putt on the par-3 fourth.

On Saturday, after a bogey again on No. 1, he had birdies on Nos.

“I haven’t hit a golf shot today, so hopefully we can get it in over the next day or so”. He started his third round with a bogey 5.

“There’s a 61 or 62 out there because it’s par 70, the greens are pristine – they’re rolling beautifully – and they’re soft”, he said, according to the BBC. In between those two, there have been 26 other golfers to shoot 63, including Mickelson earlier this year in the British Open in Scotland.

“It’s a major championship, and we want it to be ran and perform as a major championship”, he said.

Major winners Justin Rose and Charl Schwartzel also made a move Saturday.

“The course looks like it is unplayable, ” Streb said during Saturdays delay. Scotland’s Catriona Matthew, at 46 trying to become the oldest major champion, was 10 under after a 71. Greg Norman and Vijay Singh both did it twice.

“I think that major record of 63 will be broken [Saturday] or [Sunday]”, said Mickelson, who shot a 2-under 68 himself, sitting at 1-under after three rounds.

Masters victor Danny Willett and Phil Mickelson are among a group tied for 61st at plus-1.

Players haven’t so much as figured out the greens over the past two days, as they have taken advantage of the soft surfaces to give themselves shorter putts and used the slower greens to putt more aggressively and eliminate some of the break.
