Jos Buttler injured in warm-up as England make three changes against Pakistan

This pitch was not in the same mould as the Nottingham one on which England piled up a new world-record one-day worldwide total of 444 for three to seal the series two days ago.

Alex Hales treated his home crowd to a masterclass at Trent Bridge, but his Test place is under threat after a poor series against Pakistan.

“The records are hugely important, we are not just a side that likes batting second. The skill level we showed again today with the ball turning a bit and a little bit of reverse swing on offer was exceptional”.

England were breaking a 10-year-old one-day worldwide record, set by Sri Lanka against Holland, and did so only from the final ball of the innings when Buttler smashed yet another boundary.

Buttler hammered six sixes and three fours to get to his half-century and finished 90 not out off 51 balls while Morgan ended unbeaten on 57.

With the series decided, both Pakistan and England have taken the opportunity to rotate their sides, but from vastly different positions of strength, while Pakistan won the toss and opted to bat first at Headingley.

“I was confident heading into this but it’s been a tough few weeks”, said man-of-the-match Hales.

But Hales believes it’s just a matter of time before an England colleague betters his score.

Morgan’s opposite number Azhar Ali had little to smile about, and conceded Pakistan did not help themselves with a shoddy performance in the field. “Our fielding, on a wicket like this, it needs to support the bowlers and that didn’t happen. It was hard to take the control back”.

Buttler and Morgan then shredded Pakistan’s bowling in the last dozen overs.

Although England managed to register the highest ODI total of all-time during the 3 match at Trent Bridge, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif has come up with a freakish claim that they were 20 to 30 runs short.

The 7ft 1in (2.16m) Irfan produced a rising delivery that Jason Roy (14) could only edge and Mohmammad Rizwan, another of Pakistan’s four changes, held a fine catch diving to his left at second slip.

Hales did give a chance on 114 when he flayed leg-spinner Yasir Shah to short extra-cover where Pakistan captain Azhar Ali dropped the head-high catch.
