The Manchester Evening News say Jose Mourinho wanted to bring in two defenders all along and the second to arrive at Old Trafford could be Jose Fonte from Southampton.

He was also a part of the Portuguese squad that won the Euro 2016 earlier this year. Moving would invariably mean taking a pay cut unless United make up the shortfall or even fund the majority of their wages.

Fonte, the Southampton captain and a Euro 2016 victor with Portugal, has also been approached by Arsenal.

Jose Fonte and Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho are both looked after by super agent Jorge Mendes.

Germany global Shrokdan Mustafi has been closely linked to a move, but Valencia are said to be asking for £30 million (ESPN), more than Arsene Wenger would be prepared to spend.

ESPN FC’s Craig Burley breaks down Manchester United’s solid EPL season-opening victory, but stresses there is still work to be done.

And, this leaves Fonte as a viable option, given he is available for a fee of just £12m in the transfer window.

Fonte has made 267 appearances for Southampton since making his debut back in 2010 but the 32-year-old is now being linked with a move elsewhere in the Premier League.

According to Mitten, Mourinho is a fan of his compatriot as he is “reliable, technically good and able to read the game well”.
