Jose Mourinho defends Chelsea players after Stoke defeat in cup

It isn’t looking good for the Portuguese Manager as may not even be in the dugout for his side’s Premier League game against Liverpool on Saturday, as he faces the possibility of a stadium ban following his latest Football Association charge.

The 2-1 defeat to West Ham on Saturday demonstrated the air of desperation permeating the club, as Nemanja Matic was sent off, acting as the catalyst for a complete emotional collapse, with Cesc Fabregas and John Terry booked for dissent and Mourinho ultimately sent to the stands for an incident at halftime.

Make no mistake, this is ground zero for Mourinho.

As Goal revealed on Monday, Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich plans to review the former Real Madrid coach’s position at the club during the worldwide break in two weeks time, and while patience is running thin after two defeats in the space of four days, it is unlikely that the club will move before mid-November.

But he was defiant in defeat, saying: “You honestly think the players are not with me?” Mourinho has until 6pm on Thursday to respond to the latest charge. Mourinho did it in his first spell at Chelsea, it’s not an easy thing to do.

The FA confirmed that Mourinho’s previous behaviour will be taken into account at the hearing and that they also have wide-ranging powers in terms of punishments. Mourinho, frustated by the recent results, did himself no favour by confronting referee Jonathan Moss, forcing Moss to send him off.

Should Chelsea sack Jose Mourinho?

Chelsea went out of the League Cup at the second hurdle on a somewhat cold and rainy Tuesday day in Stoke.

“It’s my firm belief that there needs to be an urgent summit meeting between Jose Mourinho, Bruce Buck the chairman of Chelsea, Richard Scudamore, the chief executive of the Premier League, and Mike Riley, general manager of PGMOL”, he said.

An injury to lead striker Diego Costa against Stoke completed their miserable night and if Mourinho is still in place by the time Liverpool come to Stamford Bridge this Saturday, the pressure pounding down on this serial victor will never have been more acute. You think they didn’t give everything to win the game?

Mourinho now appears to be on the brink of being sacked by Chelsea, but he faced up to the media in a fiesty press conference to reject claims that his players have turned against him in typically forthright fashion. “If they want any inspiration they’ve got to look at me because I don’t want them shrinking”, he said.

‘The clubs that he has been at have always been top clubs and have probably had very few periods where he’s lost the number of games he has in quick succession, ‘ said Hughes.
