After his most hard week as Manchester United manager so far, Jose Mourinho had a little reason to smile as his side overcame a potentially sticky test against Northampton Town in the English League Cup. Mourinho will hope this result will galvanize his side ahead of the big clash against Leicester City on Saturday.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Mourinho said: “We deserved it”.
Nigel Winteburn and Ray Parlour react to Jose Mourinho’s claim that football is “full of Einsteins” and that they “tried to delete 16 years of my career”.
“But that’s the new football – it’s full of Einsteins”.
However, the United manager’s winning start came to an abrupt halt after the global break as the home defeat to rivals Manchester City was compounded by losses at Feyenoord and Watford.
“I said two weeks ago we were very disappointed because (the last derby) was in front of our own fans against the city opponents and now we have another chance to play against them”.
Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick has no plans to change his style after impressing in a win over Northampton Town.
Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford, second right, scores his team’s third goal.
However, Mourinho was keen to look at the upcoming games on the club’s fixture list, and delivered an annoyed response to recent criticism of him and his team.
“We had a bad week, a bad eight days where we’ve lost three games, and it’s important now we react well to that and come through that”.
“We still have, I think, six or seven games before that, so we will have time to think about it”.
Mourinho will surely be looking for revenge in this always-momentous affair, and it’s surely going to be the most enticing matchup of round four in the EFL Cup.
“We can show again what you want to do. In the second half, we didn’t stop until we scored”.

“Of course we are playing against the last Premier League winners, the champions, so we have to respect them but we have to try to win”.
