Jose Mourinho future under the spotlight as Chelsea continue to struggle

The Blues have been beaten nine times already in the Premier League, with hopes of finishing in the top four looking remote at best, and it’s thought the club have started to draw up a contingency plan in the event of Mourinho’s dismissal.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho’s future at the club has been discussed at board level following Monday night’s 2-1 defeat at Leicester in the English Premier League.

Chelsea’s latest flop is certain to bring renewed reports that Mourinho is on the verge of being sacked, but he is determined to oversee a turnaround and urged his players to show humility as they look to change their fortunes.

Jose Mourinho’s second spell as Chelsea boss appears to be close to an end as owner Roman Abramovich led discussions about his position with the Blues’ board of directors on Wednesday.

“The players at this minute can not feel top players or they are superstars. I’m sure we’ll turn it around”.

The tensions at Chelsea were made perfectly clear when Mourinho claimed that his players had “betrayed” him in a post-match interview following the Leicester defeat, with the Portuguese deeply unhappy with the players’ inability to convert their training ground improvements into performances during matches.

“I am not afraid of a big challenge”, Mourinho said. They were outfought in the loss to Bournemouth the previous weekend and again by Leicester on Monday. “If you are a big player and paid like a big player, you must play like a big player and behave like a big player”, the 28-year-old said.

Mourinho agreed a new four-year contract at the end of last season, which was publicly announced in August. We all have big players and small players but the attitude must be spot on.

As a group, Chelsea’s players need to be working much harder.

Who is the best player in the Premier League this season?

Van Gaal has said he will walk away if he feels he has lost the backing of his players.

Chelsea also needs leaders, but it still might be time to drop Terry and go with Gary Cahill and Kurt Zouma as a regular centre back pairing.

“I accept we are around the relegation zone, I don’t accept we are in a relegation battle”, added Mourinho.

Guus Hiddink, who in 2009 was parachuted into the job to replace Luiz Felipe Scolari, is one of the names under serious consideration by the Chelsea board.
