Hiddink has replaced axed coach Jose Mourinho at the reigning Premier League champions, and watched their 3-1 weekend win over Sunderland from the stands alongside owner Roman Abromovich as well as Drogba.
Chelsea play seventh-placed Watford on Saturday, before traveling to Old Trafford two days later to play Manchester United, managed by Hiddink’s countryman Louis van Gaal.
He told the Echo: “If Mourinho was still there, I still think we would have lost”.
Chelsea captain John Terry believes interim manager Guus Hiddink can help lead his team near the Premier League’s top four.
It will be the Dutchman’s second temporary spell in charge at Stamford Bridge, having stepped in for the sacked Luiz Felipe Scolari midway the 2008-09 season and guided Chelsea to FA Cup success as well as the Champions League semifinals.
Drogba is now on an end-of-season break following his first season in the MLS with Montreal Impact. We both team and fans played a great game this afternoon.
Mourinho is unlikely to have offered a glowing endorsement for some of his former players, with Branisav Ivanovic, Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa among those booed by Chelsea fans for their perceived role in the downfall of Mourinho.
Hiddink has been appointed Chelsea manager till the end of the season after the sacking of Jose Mourinho.
The west London club announced on Thursday afternoon they had parted company with Mourinho by “mutual consent” after a poor start to the season left them one point above the relegation zone.
Jose Mourinho will be back in management soon because big clubs want him and because he lives and breathes football, his former Chelsea assistant Steve Holland said on Saturday.
“If it was the case where you could get rid of a lot of players, I’m sure clubs would do that, but unfortunately it does fall on the manager’s head”, said the centre-back. “He will not be taking a sabbatical, he isn’t exhausted, he doesn’t need it, he is very positive, and is already looking forward”, said a statement from CAA.
