Jose Mourinho ‘proud’ and ‘honoured’ to be Manchester United manager

The 53-year-old signed a three year deal with the club during the week and is tasked with driving United out of obscurity and into Europe’s elite club competition again while ensuring they challenge more forcefully for domestic titles in the coming years.

Mourinho was hired several days after the club fired two-year manager Louis van Gaal.

Andy Cole feels Jose Mourinho has “something to prove as an individual” following his appointment as Manchester United manager on Friday. “His track record of success is ideal to take the club forward”. It is a club known and admired throughout the world. “I don’t see any other club that is better than Real Madrid”.

Mourinho says that the players “need to listen” as he wants “to win” and he has also called on the supporters to feel that too but Mourinho feels that “we can win, really”.

Terry looked set to depart Stamford Bridge only a month ago but will now be preparing to face his former manager after accepting a one-year contract extension with the Blues.

Mourinho was sacked at the end of 2015 from Chelsea, after suffering one of the worst title defenses the Premier League had ever seen.

Since Alex Ferguson retired after winning the Premier League in 2013 the club have finished seventh, fourth and fifth, securing their only silverware in that time by winning this season’s FA Cup.

“So I can say I am happy, I am proud, I am honoured, but the reality is that what I love is to work and I cannot wait for 7th July to go onto the pitch”.

“One perspective is the past three years and another perspective is the club history”.

Former United defender Rio Ferdinand said Mourinho needed to revive a winning mentality.

“I hope Manchester United get back to what they were because it’s an impressive club but in the last years they lacked an identity a bit”.

“I’m sure that United’s fans and players will be delighted with that because, as I’ve said many times before, he’s the best manager I’ve worked under”.

“When I was a player, I always liked coaches such as Mourinho; not everyone has the same attitude and Jose Mourinho is not afraid of being Jose Mourinho, despite knowing that his style won’t appeal to everyone”.

The Portuguese was formally appointed on Friday following weeks of intense speculation
