Jose Mourinho unruffled after Manchester United lose 2016/17 Europa League opener

And he says Jose Mourinho’s team must bounce back at Watford in Sunday’s noon kick-off Premier League fixture because a third consecutive defeat will be “unacceptable”.

Red Devils boss Mourinho admitted his players are now lacking confidence – despite starting the season with four consecutive wins across the Community Shield and Premier League.

“But I think we are experienced players and the players are very good guys and I know they want to win and work, so that’s what we have to do”.

The United manager conceded the mood in the squad was no longer quite so buoyant, but he is confident his players will put their recent struggles behind them this weekend.

Mourinho also made eight changes to the starting team that was largely outclassed by City five days earlier, resting Wayne Rooney, Luke Shaw, and Antonio Valencia completely, and starting Zlatan Ibrahimovic on the bench.

“I know the situation is not a case of clicking your fingers and everything is ideal”.

United who had started off their campaign by winning the Community Shield against Leicester City and their first three Premier League matches, tasted defeat for the first time this season against Manchester City.

“I think the game on Sunday will be an independent game”.

The two defeats in quick succession have, though, increased the scrutiny ahead of Sunday’s return to Premier League action at Watford.

But the Portuguese gave a bullish answer, saying: “When you lose matches there are no miracles in terms of the players’ souls.

I played with enough good players to win the match”, Mourinho added.

Herrera has suffered after the signing of Paul Pogba for a world record £89 million transfer fee this summer. The thing that impressed me the most was the fact he was only young when he came into the side and he wanted to be the best player in the side. Nevertheless, playing in their first ever group match in Europe’s second tier club competition the visitors produced a limp display which saw them fail to regularly threaten the Eredivisie leaders.
