Speaking on Ireland AM on TV3 this morning, Duffy confirmed that he’ll be taking on the division’s 14th ranked fighter at the 3Arena on Saturday, 24 October. “You climb the rankings and you keep going until you’re fighting for that belt”.

Since making his return to the cage, “Irish Joe” has has earned four straight stoppage victories, including a first round TKO over Jake Lindsney and first round submission over Ivan Jorge in his first two bouts under the UFC banner.

Duffy is famously known as the last man to beat Conor McGregor back in 2010, and took a 3 year break from MMA to pursue professional boxing until 2014 where his striking has dramatically improved.

Perhaps more importantly for the casual fan, Duffy is one of only two men to hold a victory over McGregor.

The Notorious Conor McGregor is believed to be lined up for a Featherweight title unification bout with Jose Aldo in Las Vegas either in December or January, but nothing has been announced.

Poirier’s opening round defeat to McGregor in September last year prompted the 26-year-old to move up a weight class and now poses a serious challenge, carrying a professional record of 18-4.

As for Poirier, the former featherweight has burst back into relevance in the lightweight division, stopping both Carlos Diego Ferreira and Yancy Medeiros in the first round since moving back to 155 lbs.
