It’s been confirmed that the Justice League director has exited the project, leaving Batgirl without a director. Whedon shared a statement with The Hollywood Reporter regarding his departure from the project, indicating that he didn’t have a great Batgirl story to tell.

He also thanked DC president Geoff Johns and Warner Bros. Many DC fans believe that Justice League was a debacle because of Joss Whedon’s involvement in the film.
Meanwhile, sources said Whedon tried to figure out how to do Batgirl, but eventually failed in doing so. He had worked in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, starred by Sarah Michelle Gellar, which had become hit during its airing course.
Christopher Nolan’s name was also rumored to be on the shortlist, but, earlier this week, the Dunkirk director shut down rumors that he could be the one to direct Bond 25. An argument could be made for Firefly which does include quite a few strong female characters, but they are by no means the main character.
There is no denying that Joss Whedon knows how to make a slick movie that appeals to audiences.
Whedon’s current projects include an untitled WWII film, which is described as a “horror slasher film”.
In the midst of the #MeToo Movement, perhaps a female filmmaker would be the best bet, but The Neon Demon’s Nicolas Winding Refn did offer to helm Batgirl back in 2016. The version of the character from DC’s New 52 was said to be a starting point for this cinematic version of the character, though it’s unclear if that will still be the case moving forward.

“Batgirl” has been a popular superhero for more than 50 years, but has never gotten her own movie. She’s recently directed three episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale, which was by far my favorite new TV show previous year, and she’s now in the midst of directing the Blake Lively spy thriller The Rhythm Section, so we know she’s down to shoot some action.
