Although Manchester United have only been eliminated from the FA Cup once by lower league opposition in the past 30 years (Leeds in 2010), this has happened eight times in that time in the League Cup – Sheffield Wednesday (1991), York (1995), Ipswich (1997), West Bromwich Albion (2003), Southend (2006), Coventry (2007), Crystal Palace (2011) and MK Dons (2014).

Rojo posted the picture above on his personal Instagram account on Monday afternoon and wrote: “Let’s keep up the good work”.

After Pereira signed his new deal in the summer, Van Gaal said: “I am delighted that Andreas has signed a new contract”.

McNair had been involved in the United matchday squad on numerous occasions but has not started a game this season and was likely to play against Ipswich in a the Football League Cup. In his United debut under interim manager Ryan Giggs in 2014, he scored twice against Hull City at Old Trafford.

Many fans feel that he should be given the chance to start in the League Cup against Ipswich in the hopes that he can prove himself worth for a more regular role in the Premier League.

Van Gaal will have to name Jones as a substitute against Ipswich.

Rojo has a hamstring problem that may rule him for a minimum of three weeks while McNair has a minor injury.

However, he managed 21 appearances in Manchester United’s title-winning under-21 season in 2014/15 as he continues to show that he has quality in abundance. If so Van Gaal could switch Matteo Darmian from right-back to left-back and start Antonio Valencia in the Italian’s usual berth.

“Unfortunately for Louis one of you (media) will have asked him “do you think Mick McCarthy’s job will be under pressure if they lose?’ And he will have said ‘well if we win, it probably will because they will be out of the World Cup”, so he will have just answered it honestly”. But the striker has been rejuvenated since his move to Ipswich from Colchester in January and has already netted four goals in seven league appearances this term. Though few have seen much of his potential up close at United, hopes are still high that one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s final transfer punts can still come good.
