The two men, caught on surveillance video footage, are considered potential witnesses, not suspects, in the bombing, said Robert Boyce, chief of detectives for the New York City Police Department.

Investigators said he bought components on eBay and used as triggering devices cell phones purchased from a store 500 meters from an address he once listed as his home. He faces several federal charges, including using weapons of mass destruction and bombing a place of public use. Most of the charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Authorities are still trying to determine whether Rahami, an American citizen who was born in Afghanistan, acted alone.

A federal defender is complaining that bombing suspect Ahmad Khan Rahami has not had access to a lawyer since he was arrested in New Jersey on Monday.

A bomb squad was called and removed the device, which was characterized by the Federal Bureau of Investigation as a pressure cooker containing an explosive charge as well as ball bearings and steel nuts. Although the device that wounded over two dozen people on the street went off in front of an apartment building for the blind, none of the building’s residents were hurt in the blast. The company said it has been cooperating with the federal inquiry.

That second device was tested for fingerprints, and the criminal complaint said all 12 prints found were matches for Rahami.

Late Sunday night, five explosive devices were discovered in a trash can at an Elizabeth train station, about 3 miles from where Rahami was later found asleep in the doorway of a bar.

“My family and I were deeply shocked and appalled at the recent incidents involving the explosions in NY and New Jersey and our thoughts and prayers are with all who were affected”.

Rahami has been investigated before, with no results.
