Judge Orders Release of 2013 Chicago Police Shooting

Now, a new video of a police shooting has emerged involving another Black 17-year-old boy. There are numerous reports and supplemental reports on the incident offering details of the alleged robbery and carjacking that preceded the shooting, as well as details about the weapon Officer Kevin Fry used a SIG Sauer P220 that investigators determined had been fired four times.

While the officers involved were cleared of wrongdoing, two of Chatman’s friends – Martel Odom, 23, and Akeem Clarke, 22 – were later charged with murder for allegedly “setting into motion” a chain of events that led to Chatman’s death, according to DNAinfo Chicago. “Officers Fry and [Lou] Toth identified a carjacked vehicle and had reason to believe that the suspect was armed”, the officers’ lawyer wrote in a statement.

It turned out the object was a black iPhone box.

“Now that the spotlight is being put on the police department, they’re no longer being aggressive; they’re no longer doing the job that they are capable of doing”, he said.

“Fry didn’t appear to exhaust his options”, Davis said, adding that he was able to review enhanced versions of the shooting footage while evaluating the case for IPRA. News also interviewed Lorenzo Davis, a Chicago Police Department supervisor, who initially found the shooting unjustified.

The initial cover-up of the McDonald shooting incensed protesters, who shut down the city’s main street on several occasions in subsequent months.

Since the family and the city now both agree the video should be made public, it is likely Gettleman will allow it to be released, and the footage could be made public as soon as Thursday.

On Thursday, Judge Robert Gettleman lifted a protective order that barred the clip’s release after the city dropped its objections.

“I think it’s irresponsible”, Gettleman added. “And until that changes, we’re calling on a boycott”. He said Green’s unusual “speech” in court showed how the city was “really trying to control the message”.

The information was included in hundreds of pages of documents that the city released Friday. Chatman’s attorneys say they’re still waiting for transparency.

Toth said he moved in to handcuff the suspect while he was on the ground. After the beating, Chatman took off alone in the victim’s auto. For example, Suffolk County, Mass., prosecutors last June quickly released video that showed law enforcement did not shoot a man named Usaamah Rahim in the back. As the short foot chase ensued, the Charger, which was still in gear, could be seen on the videos rolling forward through the intersection.

The primary dispute in the civil case is over whether Chatman turned toward police before he was shot. The officer says he fired after seeing Chatman turn toward officers with a dark object in his hand.

The release is part of a lawsuit Chatman’s family filed against the city.

Chatman was shot on January 7, 2013 near 75th Street and Jeffery Boulevard, according to court records. “It was – it extended in front of his body”. Attorneys for Chatman’s family said that the video contradicts Fry’s account, and that the teenager never turned around. Officer (Lou) Toth is right behind him; he’s doing the right thing. Smolens asked, according to the transcript.

MSNBC’s Chief Legal Correspondent Ari Melber, who helped prepare the analysis, said the video may help answer the key legal question about the shooting.

“I felt his threat was as such that I didn’t have time to say anything”. The video of that killing was not released until last November.
