Judge Rejects Ex-Gov. Blagojevich’s Plea for Shorter Prison Sentence

A judge for the US District Court for the Northern District of IL [official website] ruled Tuesday that former IL governor Rod Blagojevich must serve the rest of his 14-year sentence in a Colorado prison.

“It’s unfortunate the judge failed to have the compassion and humanity yesterday to give him some justice in reducing his sentence”, Blagojevich said.

“I’ve done everything I could to see my brother”, Blagojevich said. He said Blagojevich remained as guilty as when he was first convicted and sentenced.

Moments earlier, Annie Blagojevich told Zagel she talks every night with her father by phone.

His older daughter, Amy, also spoke in court, saying it was hard to stay connected with her dad or even to have private conversations with him during visits to prison. “I am pleading with you, indeed begging you, to please be merciful”. More than 100 fellow inmates wrote letters to the judge describing Blagojevich as a model prisoner who helped others.

A resentencing hearing is scheduled Tuesday in Chicago federal court after an appeals court struck down five of his 18 convictions.

Blagojevich’s attorney, Leonard C. Goodman, urged the judge to take a “fresh look” at the case.
