Judge tosses out Beyonce lawsuit over ‘Lemonade’ claims

A NY federal judge threw out a plagiarism case brought against Beyoncé by a filmmaker for alleged similarities between her visual album LEMONADE and his 2014 short film Palinoia, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Fulks, stated his film detailed a “tumultuous relationship” – just like the one Beyonce sings about in Lemonade – and went on to allege a senior vice president at Beyonce’s Columbia Records label, who viewed Palinoia in 2015, may have lifted ideas for the singer’s project, when filming began. It also alleged that several people involved in Lemonade had access to Palinoia as Fulks claimed he had sent them his film prior to Lemonade’s creation.

“The protagonist in plaintiff’s film is a white man who is distressed in the wake of a failed relationship, while the defendants’ protagonist is an African-American woman who progresses through stages of suspicion, denial, anger and, ultimately, reconciliation in her relationship”, Ferber said in a court motion.
