JLD picked up her fifth consecutive Emmy Award a short while ago for her role as Selina Meyer on HBO’s stunningly amusing series ‘Veep,’ breaking the record for most consecutive Emmy Awards won by an actor.
“Being a director is so f-ing easy”, she said in accepting the comedy series directing award.
Actress Julia Louis-Dreyfu dedicated her Emmy award to her late father William Louis-Dreyfus who passed away on Friday at 84. “I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics”, she deadpanned.
As Americans prepare to vote in November for a new president, Veep is also expected to win the coveted comedy series category, which is announced at the end of Sunday’s three-hour ceremony.
She also joked that her widely-acclaimed show had started as a comedy, but was increasingly resembling a documentary – a slap at the chaotic U.S. presidential campaign.
History was made as Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her fifth consecutive Emmy for a political comedy.
Rami Malek won for best actor in a drama series for his role in “Mr. Robot”.
The Sky Atlantic fantasy, based on George RR Martin’s novels, was named best drama series, while also picking up honours for outstanding writing and directing. “So I promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it”. She won her first Emmy in 1996 for playing Elaine Benis on Seinfeld. It was her third win in five nominations for the role. But she knew who to credit.
British actress Maggie Smith was honoured as best supporting actress in a drama series for the final season of Downton Abbey.
Viewers hoping for a reprieve need not have tuned into last night’s Emmy awards, where, in addition to the usual elaborate gowns and tearful thank you speeches, this year’s ceremonies were dominated by the Donald. “Thank you”, she said as her voice started to shake.

Regina King claimed the award for supporting actress in a limited series for “American Crime”, her second trophy for the program. The Emmys have outpaced the much-criticized Academy Awards, and each of this year’s major acting categories includes at least one minority nominee.
