Julian Edelman in pads for Patriots practice, off PUP list

Edelman was injured in mid-November last season and only played in nine games for the New England Patriots as a result, though he did return for the playoffs. Edelman didn’t take part in Sunday’s intrasquad scrimmage, but caught passes from Tom Brady after doing conditioning work in pads.

Amendola, who underwent surgery on his left knee and an ankle this offseason, remains on the PUP list.

“Today, me and Tom got to throw a few and that’s always good”, said Edelman. “It’s good to get out here and run around with the pads and adjust to catching a ball with the shoulder pads and the helmet and the facemask”.

Chris Hogan suffered an early injury in camp and Nate Washington has been limited after missing several days early in camp with an illness.

– Cyrus Jones and V’Angelo Bentley continued to work on fielding punts. Malcolm Mitchell and Devin Lucien also are vying for the fifth receiver spot. I’d say Aaron’s just, for whatever reason, hasn’t been able to consistently be on the field and do it. It’s not just being healthy, but being healthy to practice and improve. Edelman may have outdid him as he had a tremendous catch in the corner of the end zone over Justin Coleman and followed it up with a big spike of the football. “So hopefully he keeps climbing in that direction”.

It is going to be tough for Jimmy Garoppolo starting the first four games of the season, but having Edelman at his disposal will make his job 1000x easier. Edelman was in pads for the first time in this camp and was a full participant in everything except the scrimmage. (He) shows good quickness, he’s caught the ball well.

“I’m very grateful for the overwhelming support I’ve received from Mr. Kraft, the Kraft family, coach Belichick, my coaches and teammates, the NFLPA, my agents, my loving family and most of all, our fans”, Brady wrote on Facebook.

Derby could have an uphill battle to crack the 53-man roster over veteran Clay Harbor, who returned to practice Monday, but he has impressive size and athleticism at 6-foot-5, 255 pounds. Troy’s a great player.

“That was an interesting game because we started out a little bit on the Tim Rattay trail and (late quarterbacks coach) Dick Rehbein went down there and worked him out at Louisiana Tech, or wherever he was from”.
