The North Carolina Commerce Department released figures Friday showing the unemployment rate for July climbed as almost 12,000 fewer people held jobs.

Economists say that’s because a growing economy is creating jobs and drawing more workers into the workforce. In the graphic above, you’ll note that the state’s unemployment rate has ticked up rather sharply since January, from 5.3 percent to 5.9 percent, even as the national unemployment rate has continued to decline. The number of unemployed has increased by 3,800.

In the last month, hospitality jobs grew by 2,100.

Several industries, including manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, financial services, education and health services, recorded gains during the month. Unemployment was lowest in Charleston and Lexington counties, which both posted rates of 5.3 percent.
