Jungle Book Fights Off Competitors To Take Top Spot
Directed by Jon Favreau, the live action reboot of the famous Disney animated feature opened with the third-highest opening record of the year, for only “Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice” (166 million dollars) and “Deadpool” (132.4 million) sold more tickets on their opening weekends. With a $175 million price tag, that’s exactly what Disney needed. According to RealD, 98 percent of China’s viewing audience watched the film in 3D; Germany was 83 percent; Brazil counted 73 percent; Russian Federation 60 percent; Mexico 47 percent; and UK & Ireland 39 percent. With a budget of $20 million, the movie will need to remain relatively steady in the weeks to come if New Line Cinema, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, and Cube Vision want to break even, much less turn a profit. Despite being in competition with Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan’s highly anticipated film “Fan”, “The Jungle Book” managed to maintain its golden run at the box office in its second week too and collected Rs 27.2 crore in its second weekend.

Overall, industry-wide totals far surpassed those of last weekend and the same weekend previous year.
The Jungle Book looks to continue its reign as box office champion, as the only upcoming film coming out this Friday is The Huntsman: Winter’s War. The list comprises of films ‘Jurassic Park’ on the first rank, ‘Titanic’ on the second rank, ‘Spiderman 3′ on the third rank, ‘2012′ on the fourth position and ‘Fast and Furious 7′ on the fifth rank. The decline shows a lack of staying power, but it’s still not a loss for McCarthy and Universal. That’s another steep decline, this time of 61%.
But “Book” notably outperformed estimates, and is barreling toward an impressive second weekend.
Disney’s animated Zootopia rounded out the top five with $8.2 million in its seventh weekend for $307.5 million total.

Last week’s No. 1 movie, The Boss, saw a steep 57% decline from its opening weekend. From 2,683 screens, it only nabbed $5.8 million and a sixth-place debut. “Frozen” only earned $198.1 million worldwide by week three – but it had a more staggered global rollout.
