Jurgen Klopp delivers verdict on Daniel Sturridge’s Liverpool comments

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has publicly admitted he’s not satisfied playing out wide for Jurgen Klopp’s side, and that he’d rather be consistently featuring in a role as a centre forward. “That’s not saying I am happy to do it”.

Sturridge scored the final two goals in that game.

Sturridge needed just 26 minutes on the pitch to remind supporters, and the manager, of his superlative class in front of goal at the Pirelli Stadium.

Divock Origi and Roberto Firmino are the men Jurgen Klopp has played through the middle so far and Sturridge said: ‘Of course it’s more hard for me to play wide. And you need enough players in the box to then finish this off.

“When he is not involved anymore in defending you need a smart striker who takes the centre-half and moves them into a position where they don’t feel comfortable”.

“But winger is not a fixed position, especially not in Daniel’s case”.

‘There is absolutely no problem. Tottenham Hotspur have slowly risen into the bracket of being a team that can challenge, but even so we have maintained a good record against them.

“Daniel is still a very quick player but he’s had a lot of injuries in the last few years and a few muscle issues – I have no idea how this exactly changes the mind of a player”, said the Reds boss.

“Ask a question, get an answer, make an opinion about it…”

And he made it clear he is unhappy Klopp has used him in the unfamiliar role. ‘I don’t want to play Daniel as a wide player, but he can play there. It is flexible football, passing movements, patterns, and all these things. It’s not that you play there and wait until something happens. “The rest [of the team] is very experienced and has played together one-and-a-half or two years almost but they are still young so there’s still space for development”.

Stoke, Swansea, Hull and Crystal Palace were other Premier League teams to progress to the third round, where clubs involved in Europe will enter the competition.
