The federal fraud and civil rights trial against two former allies of Republican New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will start with opening statements in federal court in Newark.

Kelly was Christie’s deputy chief of staff and was the author of an email saying, “Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee”. But he is sure to be mentioned during the trial and could be subpoenaed to testify. Kelly is Christie’s former deputy chief of staff. He was popular with late-night TV hosts and topped national polls as a prospective 2016 presidential candidate. About a month later, during the first week of school, some local access lanes and toll booths on the Fort Lee side of the George Washington Bridge were closed, creating a five-day traffic jam and ensuing political scandal.

At the time, Kelly, was the governor’s deputy chief of staff and Baroni was his top executive appointee at the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey, which owns and operates the bridge.

Christie also told MSNBC that he has not been offered a role in the Trump administration, but that he would consider it depending on “what I’m offered”.

Increased school funding should be tied to student outcomes and claims teacher tenure rules are obstacles to a quality education, Christie said. A photo surfaced of them together at a 9/11 memorial service in NY on one of the days the bridge access lanes were closed.

“Any motivation Baroni might have had for misusing Port Authority resources is sufficient, so long as the statutory elements are met”, they wrote.
