Justin Trudeau uses business speech in China to focus on human rights

Trudeau told a joint news conference that prior to his trip, China-Canada relations had “somewhat lacked in stability and regularity”.

Farmers across Canada breathed a sigh of relief as China promised an extension on Thursday’s fast-approaching deadline to introduce rule changes on Canadian canola shipments – a dispute that had threatened to inflict damage on the multibillion-dollar agricultural sector.

China’s ambassador to Canada, Luo Zhaohui, complained last week that Canada was being inflexible and unfair in its approach to talks that began about seven years ago.

Li also said the case of a Canadian citizen detained in China on suspicion of spying was being handled according to law.

Chu Jian, an expert with the Bejing-based think tank Center for China and Globalization, said that Trudeau wants to cement economic ties with China on the visit and that Canada wants “a piece of the pie” as an increasing number of Chinese companies eye investment opportunities overseas.

“Kevin should be released to allow the two countries to move forward to develop stronger ties and co-operation on many levels”, the statement said. It will feature special promotions for unique Canadian products such as apparel, ice wine, maple syrup, seafood and health products.
