India today passed a bill allowing harsher punishments for juveniles aged 16-18 after an outcry over the release of a young rapist who served three years in a detention facility for his part in a notorious gang-rape in 2012. However, members of Left parties walked out of the Rajya Sabha before the bill was passed, demanding that it should be sent to a select committee of the house.

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Ghulam Nabi Azad, pitched for a different setup for juvenile criminals.

As far as those who commit heinous crimes are concerned, the priest said there are some children who reach maturity (physically and mentally) faster than others and they are fully aware of what they are doing.
