Militants attacked an global charity in Kabul Tuesday during an hours-long assault labelled a war crime by Amnesty, as the capital reeled from a wave of violence that has killed at least 24 and wounded dozens.
The incident began Monday, shortly after 11 p.m., when a suicide vehicle bomb exploded in Kabul’s Shahr-e-Naw neighborhood outside the compound of CARE International, a nonprofit with programs in education, women’s empowerment, rural development and emergency response.
President Ashraf Ghani strongly condemned the attack and blamed the “enemies of Afghanistan” for the incident.
The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which it said killed 58 officers and commanders.
The suicide bomber attacked shortly after 11 pm (1900 GMT) in a busy shopping area, where shops were open till late ahead of the Eid holidays. After that, three gunmen holed themselves up close to a government complex near the office of a charitable organization, Care International. The exact target of the attack is not yet known. CARE International said on Twitter that all of its staff members in Afghanistan were safe and assessments were continuing.
“China always believes that promoting the Afghanistan reconciliation process led and owned by the Afghan people is the only ultimate way out of the Afghanistan issue”.
Monday night at 11 pm, the attack started off with a heavy explosion, which was thought to have been a auto bomb.
Explosions and gunfire rang out during an hours-long attack on a Kabul charity, the latest assault in a wave of violence in the Afghan capital that killed at least 25 people and wounded dozens.
Just a month before a conference in Brussels where worldwide donors were expected to pledge continued financial support to Afghanistan, the attacks highlighted the precarious security climate in the capital.
Three gunmen have been killed in a firefight with Afghan special forces after they entered a building belonging to a charity in Kabul.
At least one person is reported dead and six others were wounded as a result of the attack, said Sediqqi.
Deputy defence ministry spokesperson Mohammad Radmanesh told the Associated Press that the suicide attacker struck as security forces gathered near the ministry to deal with the first blast.
“When the first explosion happened people crowded to the site and then the second blast occurred, which was really powerful and killed lots of people”. That assault was claimed by Islamic State. “42 people who were trapped were evacuated by the security forces”, the statement said.
