Kabul Embassy Attack: Taliban Fighters Killed

Afghan security forces suppressed a suicide attack on a guest house near the Spanish embassy in Kabul, killing three Taliban fighters after hours of intermittent gunfire and explosions that lasted into the early hours of Saturday.

The Spanish government said Saturday a Taliban attack in Kabul, in which two Spanish policemen were killed, was “an attack on Spain”.

Security officials had cordoned off the streets and ambulances with wailing sirens were seen rushing to the scene. The discrepancy could not immediately be clarified.

Mr Ghani said in a statement that he accepted general Nabil’s resignation and would replace him with someone from within NDS.

“It’s possible the attackers are hiding”.

“There has not been an attack, nor an attempt to carry one out on the Spanish embassy in Afghanistan” Mr Rajoy said.

Rajoy denied reports that the Spanish embassy had been the target, though the guesthouse was home to embassy employees.

Sherpur is home to several foreign NGOs and residences of senior government officials, including former warlord Abdul Rashid Dostum, Afghanistan’s first vice-president.

The Council reiterated its serious concern at the threats posed by the Taliban, Al-Qaida, Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) affiliates, and illegal armed groups to the local population, national security forces, and worldwide presence in Afghanistan.

The death toll from a 27-hour Taliban siege of Kandahar airport has jumped to 50, Afghan officials said on Thursday, after a conference in Pakistan shored up worldwide support for reviving peace talks. The casualties from the Kandahar attack, which ended Wednesday night, included 38 civilians, 10 Afghan soldiers and two police officers, according to the Ministry of Defense.

Separately a district chief was shot and killed by insurgents in the northern province of northern Baghlan, said Jawed Basharat, spokesman for the provincial police chief. Basharat said that Jabar’s driver and two of his bodyguards were abducted by the insurgents and police forces were searching for the missing men.
