He will have surgery on his non throwing left shoulder. Recovery time is estimated at 4-6 months. His $13.9 million base salary for 2016 doesn’t become guaranteed until April 1, so if the 49ers do plan to move on from Kaepernick it will likely be before then.

Perhaps the biggest change for the rookie signal-caller was adjusting to the terminology of San Francisco’s offense.

He was intercepted 26 times and has an 88.4 passer rating. He also rushed for 256 yards with one touchdown.

“If the 49ers decide to part ways with Kaepernick after the 2015 season, it won’t cost much thanks to Kaepernick’s team-friendly contract”. It seems unlikely that the 28 year old would want to do a favor for the team, especially since he is losing $1 million by going on IR. It was easy to trade Alex Smith, the loser in Kaepernick’s remarkable ascent to the starting job in 2012, when he was healthy and playing well.
