Kaine makes debut as Clinton running mate
The former secretary of state will formally be nominated as her party’s presidential candidate in the November 8 election at the Democratic convention in Philadelphia, which opens on Monday. Tim Kaine, D-Va., arrive at a rally at Florida International University Panther Arena in Miami, Saturday, July 23, 2016.

Tim Kaine made a big splash Saturday in his first appearance as Hillary Clinton’s running mate for the White House, savaging Donald Trump‘s foreign policy ideas as risky and wowing a Miami crowd with fluent Spanish.
Clinton echoed the view that “Senator Tim Kaine is everything Donald Trump and Mike Pence are not”.
“I’m sure he’s not going to opine on whether a carbon tax is better than a cap-and-trade mechanism”, Kaine said of the pope days before the encyclical was published in 2015. “Isn’t it great already”, he said of America. There was speculation that Clinton would delay the announcement because of the shooting in Munich, as Donald Trump did after the attack in Nice, France, but she went ahead as planned Friday evening.
“One of the many, many reasons but I think it’s among the profoundly largest and most widespread reasons that Bernie delegates here and reflecting supporters around the country are so upset about the Kaine pick is not only that it’s the one thing that Hillary Clinton can not go back on later on, she’s locked into her pick”, said Solomon. I’m 8-0, and I promise you: “I’m not about to let that change, especially when Donald Trump stands in the way of progress on every single one of these issues that Hillary has laid out as part of her campaign, and many, many more”. He also had a particularly powerful backer in Obama, whom Kaine endorsed in 2007.
JEFF GREENFIELD: Yes, I would say that does not come under the heading of “coincidence”. “Drawing a blank. Congrats to a good man and a good friend”, he said.
Despite that absence, many analysts and Wall Street types commended the selection and said it was an indicator for the direction Clinton would take with tech and business. Some had hoped that after Bernie Sanders’ pro-socialist policy speeches attracted wide support during the primary campaign, Clinton would choose a more liberal candidate.
“Folks, that’s an open invitation to Vladimir Putin to roll on in”, said Kaine, an experienced foreign policy hand who serves on both the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services committees – and whose son is about to deploy with the U.S. military to Europe. He made a point of highlighting an unblemished campaign win-loss record throughout his career. Tim Kaine received a hero’s welcome outside his Richmond home, capping off his debut as Hillary Clinton’s running mate.
Kaine is receiving praise for his wide-ranging experience, even as many delegates acknowledged that he would not generate the level of enthusiasm or party unity as a more progressive or first-ever Latino pick.

In his speech, Mr Kaine described his childhood in Kansas City helping his father in his metal-working shop and his Catholic mission to Honduras, where he helped teenagers with carpentry and welding and they taught him Spanish. He is fluent in Spanish, a skill he’ll show off on the stump on Saturday before an audience with a large number of Hispanic voters. There’s reports now that Tim Kaine has accepted $160,000 in gifts while he was serving as lieutenant governor and governor of Virginia.
