Kalamazoo man killed in Afghanistan

Pelky was assigned to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Kuhse was assigned to the 3rd Manpower Requirements Squadron at Scott Air Force Base. According to family on social media, one of the Americans was U.S. Air Force Master Sgt. Greg Kuhse.

The Pentagon has not released the names of the two Americans killed in the crash, but North Atlantic Treaty Organisation said the crash killed two British service members, two American service members and a French civilian contractor.

Sunday’s crash happened a little more than a week after six US airmen were killed on October. 2 when their C-130J crashed at Jalalabad Airfield shortly after takeoff.

Five people were also injured in the wreck. A witness told the Associated Press that the helicopter appeared to strike a monitoring balloon. Najibullah said the helicopter went down and then black smoke rose from the area.

A statement from the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the identities of the two American victims.

British military officials say the crash was an accident and not the result of insurgent activity.
