BYU met with a range of other candidates nationally, including Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo as late as Monday morning.
BYU has picked Oregon State defensive coordinator Kalani Sitake to be its new head coach, Dick Harmon of the Deseret News is reporting.
The Salt Lake Tribune’s Jay Drew confirmed the news, citing multiple sources.
With the news coming on the day of the Las Vegas Bowl between the Cougars and Utes, naturally some rivalry talk snuck into the Sitake conversation.
Prior to Utah, Sitake coached running backs, tight ends and the offensive line at Southern Utah University in 2003 and 2004.
Sitake added the title of assistant head coach at Utah in 2012.
Although the prevailing thought is one of positivity, fans do have questions about Sitake.
BYU’s long coaching search is now reportedly over.
Sitake joined the Oregon State staff when Gary Andersen was hired by the Beavers.
Sitake is the fourth Pac-12 coordinator to get a head-coaching job this season, joining Arizona State’s Mike Norvell (Memphis), Oregon’s Scott Frost (Central Florida) and USC’s Clay Helton (interim tag removed). He took over defensive coordinator duties at Utah in 2009, becoming the first Tongan to hold that position in college football’s highest division, the Football Bowl Subdivision. Utah’s defense had been in the top 30 in S&P+ from 2014-2010, an impressive feat.
