Kansas City, Kansas, police captain killed after drive-by shooting

Melton was pronounced dead at around 3:00 p.m.

“Our detective fought a good fight, but unfortunately he died from his injuries at approximately 3:30 p.m.”, Police Chief Terry Zeigler said in a tweet. Melton was shot and killed as he caught up to the shooters.

A resident at the Juniper Gardens apartment complex (pictured, Second Street and Edgerton Drive) called police at 1.33pm reporting that a auto full of people opened fire.

The Kansas City Star reports that police radio traffic indicated that multiple suspects ran from the scene.

Then, three or four occupants of the vehicle jumped out and ran away.

One person is in custody and two others who might be connected to the incident have been detained.

About a half-hour after the initial report, an officer saw people matching the suspects’ description 20 blocks from the original scene and approached them in his patrol auto.

Local station KMBC reports a crying friend of Melton said, “This violence has got to stop”. “The police have to be recognized as good people trying to make our communities safer and not be subjected to hateful chants and rhetoric”, the statement continued.
