A Kansas City police officer has died after he was shot this afternoon.
Chief Terry Zeigler said during a news conference that all suspects are thought to be in custody and that the investigation will go to prosecutors later Wednesday. Goble knows the family of the fallen officer and hoped to place.
“I’m just so sorry for his family”, she said.
The ATF has sent about 20 agents to the scene of the shooting.
Melton’s death is the second time a Kansas City, Kansas police officer has been shot and killed this year. He says they will look at their procedures to see if any changes need to be made.
He talked about the anti-police and hate speech, even though this crime didn’t fit the narrative of what’s been happening across the U.S. He asked for the community to continue to speak up, that’s the only way they’ll be able to change crime and get rid of crime in the community.
At around 1:58 p.m. CT, Melton, 46, and another officer saw the person who fled and Melton tried cut him off with his police auto, but the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire, shooting through the passenger’s side window, the police chief said.
Kathryn Courtney said Capt Melton had been “born to protect and serve”. Police weren’t releasing the suspects’ names because charges hadn’t been filed. He arrived at about 2:22 p.m. and did not have a pulse, doctors said.
UPDATE 7:30PM ET: Captain Robert Melton was still inside his vehicle when he was shot. Melton was declared dead at a hospital. Our police and city officials will share information as it becomes available.
Melton was hit multiple times and later died at the University of Kansas Hospital.
The officer was shot Tuesday afternoon in his auto as he approached people matching the description of suspects in an earlier shooting.
Officers arrived at the scene, and police said the suspects crashed their vehicle into a fence before fleeing the area.
A police spokeswoman said the suspect was being questioned Tuesday evening along with another person suspected in the initial drive-by shooting.
He says three or four suspects jumped out of the auto after police arrived at the scene. One person was immediately caught. The chase ended about 2 miles from where the suspects were initially reported to a 911 dispatcher.
Police spokesman Cameron Morgan said other officers arrived on scene to find the Melton’s auto “in the middle of the street”. An officer took a suspect into custody at 1:39 p.m.
